assignment 4 - what photos I'd pick.

My tutor asked me to tell what photos I'd pick for the article. I thought I'd post it here.

I did the assignment about Finnish summers, and the Finnish archipelago, more specifically, an island called Trollholmen- Troll island.

Here's my choises:

Dining out

F 6.3 1/320sec Iso100 40mm

It’s all about living outside, enjoying the nice beautiful weather and surroundings. Why would you sit inside and eat when you can sit outside listening and looking at the seagulls and the sea. It also shows that you don’t need a terrace; you just find a half smooth place and put your table there. Also it’s very simple, just a table with two benches.

I like the photo, because it’s simple, the table is the first thing you look at, then your eyes go to the sea and the trees, it’s highlighting the fact that on the islands your living space is also outside.

Sea, sky and stone

F8 1/400sec Iso100 40mm

This photo is all about the sea, how calm it can be, how gentle, the rocks next to the sea are smooth and soft from the sea slowly grinding them down, taking the moss and the harsh edges away. In the bottom of the photo you can see dry seaweed and the small pebbles that have been thrown ashore.

And in the horizon you can see two small bumps, islands that belong to Estonia, but before that there’s nothing.

I like the way the sea reflects, and how you can see the gentle movement in the sea.
I removed the bird and straighten the photo, as it was crocked and the bird was just a black blob at the edge of the photo.

In a rush

F6.3 1/400sec Iso100 54mm

I like this photo a lot; I like the movement of the boat and the nature around.

I also like the sky, as for once it’s not white and there are clouds.

The hidden hideaway

F5 1/200sec Iso100 40mm

This photo shows how well the cabins blend in with the nature, you can see that there’s a cabin there, but the trees do hide it well, also you can see that the cabin is the painted with brown and the roof is green, it’s all about blending in with the nature. If you look closely you can see the sun panel on the roof next to the chimney, it provides part of the electricity to the cabin.

The rock in the front is a over light, I tried to crop the photo so that I’d get less of the rock, but then it didn’t look as good. And this way the cabin looks more hidden, witch is the whole point of this photo.

Other then that I think the photo does what I was hoping for, it shows a hidden cabin.

The kitchen

F2.8 1/30sec Iso 100 14mm

Now we move inside the cabin, this is the kitchen, and it’s simple. As there was not electricity when the cabin was built, there’s a small gas cocker, where you can boil water for tea, or cook potatoes. The wood burning stove is there to heat up the cabin.

There’s no wallpaper, it’s all planks, and even the ceiling is made with wood planks.

All in all there’s a lot of wood in the materials.

A few things disturb me in this photo; firstly that the wood basket next to the stove doesn’t have any wood in it, but instead some cardboard and that the cabinet in the corner looks messy. I should have done some stylising before this photo.

Then again I do like that it looks homely. And I like the two stools next to the table, even if we’re in a cabin, it doesn’t mean that you can’t have some Finnish design.

*I had two photos from inside the cabin, I liked them both, but think that this one shows better the simple island living.*

Spending time together

F 4.5 1/200sec Iso 100 54mm

In a way I think this captures the whole point of going out to the islands; spending time together, the hash nature and the sea.

I like the photo, it just what it’s all about. However it would have been nice to see the girls face, now just wonder what’s she’s looking at.

I guess all in all, the photos show the all the things I want to show about Trollholmen, and that's why I picked these ones.
